Rabbit Statue
I bought this rabbit after one of the kids' rabbits passed away. Fifteen years outside took its toll on the statue. I figured I'd use my secret decorating weapon, my artistically talented daughter-in-law, to give the rabbit a makeover. The project was a success.
"Before" Pictures
The Base Coat.
I used to work for a painter before I went to college. I painted lots of things, but I never painted a concrete statue. On the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, you "Phone a Friend" when you need help. When doing DIY, it's "YouTube to the rescue." I found a fellow on YouTube who seemed to know what he was talking about when it came to painting concrete statues. He definitely did.
As instructed, I thoroughly cleaned the statue. I used water, a medium sized scrub brush, and a toothbrush for the tight spots. I did not use any soap. A thorough rinsing left the statue wet, as needed for the base coat application. For the base coat, I mixed one part paint with one part water. I applied the first coat, let it dry, and applied a second coat.
Supplies
The base coat was Sherwin Williams Threshold Taupe (7501). The various concrete statuary painting sites I visited recommended using acrylic paints, so I brought K to Michaels and bought the colors she picked out.
Before putting the rabbit back outside, I will apply a several coats of exterior polyurethane.
